This $2.49 ALDI Find Is Oh-So-German (and Oh-So-Delicious)

Must Try

In the past 20 years, I’ve become something of a bread snob. I’ve been making sourdough regularly for about ten years, I routinely make fresh bread in my bread machine, and I still buy special loaves from the store or farmer’s market.

One of those is vollkornbrot, a hearty and satisfying 100 percent rye German bread I fell in love with years ago. It’s made with such wholesome ingredients that it feels nourishing to eat, and I feel great feeding it to my kids.

So I was thrilled to find ALDI’s Deutsche Küche German breads for $2.49 in this week’s finds. I usually pay $4.50 for a loaf, and Walmart sells something similar for $9.97 (wild!). With that in mind, I headed to ALDI to stock up on my favorite sunflower seed loaf.

How I Like To Eat ALDI’s German Bread

If you’re unfamiliar with this style of German bread, its dense, dark, doubles-as-a-doorstop look might not be appealing, but looks can be deceiving. It’s hearty, intensely flavorful, and can upgrade everything from a quick breakfast to a grilled cheese sandwich.

The first time I had this bread, I ate it toasted with a thick layer of peanut butter and learned immediately that it should always be toasted. Toasted and buttered, it makes a supreme combination with fried eggs and a really good avocado toast. In my single days, I ate the fried egg and toast combo alongside sauteed garlicky kale for breakfast or dinner most days of the week.

I also love making snack boards with “butterbrot,” German bread with butter. During my first maternity leave, we traveled in Europe for three months and lived in Germany for five weeks. There, I learned about brotzeit (translated as “bread time”), where a simple, snack-type meal of cold sandwich toppings, like sausage, deli meats, cheeses, vegetables, mustard, and pickles, is served with a basket of bread. In Germany, we enjoyed it as an afternoon snack with beer, but at home we call it lunch or dinner.

I waffle between crusty sourdough and slices of this bread alongside a hearty soup or stew. The German bread’s firm texture is perfect for soaking up every last drop of broth, and it adds a satisfying chewiness that makes the meal feel complete. It also has staying power. Unlike some other breads, it makes me feel full and satisfied.

The Deutsche Küche German bread is available in pumpernickel, sunflower seed, and whole rye. If you haven’t tried this style of German bread yet, ALDI’s $2.49 price tag won’t make your wallet weep. As with all ALDI finds, there are no re-stocks. So, get yours while they last.
