Ingredients For Pork Chops With Apple Butter
- bone in pork chops
- salt
- black pepper
- olive oil
- apples cored and sliced
- yellow onion thinly sliced
- fresh rosemary – can also use dried
- cinnamon ground
- nutmeg ground
- all purpose flour
- chicken broth – can also use apple cider, or sometimes I’ll add just a splash of apple cider vinegar to the broth
- apple butter – can also use sweetened or unsweetened applesauce in a pinch, see notes in the recipe card. You can use homemade apple butter or a jar of apple butter from the store.
A deep, large skillet works best for this recipe, but you can also use a large dutch oven style pot.
How To Make Savory Skillet Apple Butter Pork Chops
- Trim the pork chops if needed Season both sides of the pork chops with salt and pepper.
- Place the oil into a large deep skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Place the pork chops in the skillet. Sear the pork chops on each side until brown, about 2-4 minutes per side. Remove the pork chops from the pan, cover and set to the side.
- Using the same skillet, turn the heat on the skillet to medium and spray lightly with spray cooking oil. Add apple and onions to the pan. Season the apples and onions with rosemary, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cook until the apples and onions are tender, about 5-6 minutes stirring frequently.
If the pan starts to look a little dry as you are cooking the apples, add either a little more chicken broth or water. The amount of liquid in the apples can vary, and sometimes adding a little extra liquid can help.
- Sprinkle the flour over the apples and onions and stir to combine for about one minute. Add the chicken broth and the apple butter to the apples mixture, mixing to combine.
- Turn the heat on the pan to medium-low. Place pork chops along with any cooking juices back to the pan. Continue cooking the pork chops in the broth mixture on medium/low heat until the pork chops are fully cooked through, about 3-4 minutes. The pork is cooked when they have an internal temperature of 145F when measured with a meat thermometer. Serve the pork chops with any sauce left from the pan and enjoy!
If the pan starts to become a little dry as you are simmering the pork chop at the end in the sauce, add a little more chicken broth or water.
Variation Ideas
Use Applesauce – Applesauce can be used instead of apple butter. Apple butter tends to have a little more spices in it though and is a little thicker. If I’m using apple sauce I use slightly more, and I add a little more cinnamon and nutmeg to the sauce.
Cooking Liquids – Don’t let the cooking liquids run dry when cooking this recipe. Add additional water or broth. You can also use apple cider or even apple juice but expect the end result will be a little sweeter.
Boneless Pork Chops – You can use boneless pork chops in this recipe. I recommend using a little more liquid and watching the cook time closely. Boneless pork chops will cook much more quickly then a bone in Porkchop, but also dry out much more easily.
