What Is an Action Level?

Farmers frequently use pesticides to protect their products from insects, weeds, fungi, and other pests. The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets limits for the amount of pesticide residues allowed to remain in or on food and still be safe for consumers. The FDA monitors and tests food products for over 800 pesticide chemical residues, and reports on the testing results.

Sometimes, farmers can’t avoid pesticides found in the environment, even when safe agricultural practices are performed. The FDA sets an “action level” for these unavoidable pesticides. If a product is found to have pesticide residue above the action level, it is deemed unsafe to consume and is recalled.

Neither the FDA nor the East West Tea Company has revealed the type and amount of pesticide chemicals that were found on the recalled tea product.
